History
The Women's Therapy Center (WTC) was originally conceived by two Berkeley clinicians, Nina Ham and Jane Loebel, in 1979, specifically to create a training site that offered an alternative to existing models of teaching psychotherapy. The guiding principle was to develop a clinical training program with a focus on the unique issues relevant to the female therapist-female client dyad. Furthermore, their goal was to integrate feminist and egalitarian ideals with sound clinical theory and technique. The WTC became a non-profit corporation in 1985. WTC's roots were in its training program, but as the years passed, our client services became central to becoming a community-based organization. Accordingly, our Women's Clinic, Couples' Clinic, and Adolescent Girls Program are designed to provide easily accessible and affordable therapy for a diverse client population in our East Bay community.
