Whistlestop commenced as a grass roots community group in 1954, long before there were senior centers, specialized transportation or considerations for people with disabilities. It is now a charitable organization that focuses on providing advice, programs and services for organizations working to enhance the lives of older adults. The first volunteer-based ride service began with one vehicle in 1968 and a small group of volunteers. Today, Whistlestop provides more than 150,000 rides per year and is the largest nonprofit serving older adults in Marin County.
