Roots of Motive Power is an all-volunteer organization based in Fort Bragg, CA, dedicated to preserving and restoring steam- and diesel-powered equipment used in the California north coast logging industry from the 1850s to the present. With over 700 members, Roots actively engages in the restoration and maintenance of equipment, track laying, newsletter publication, event photography, and serving as docents and librarians for the Redwood Empire Railroad History.
Founded in 1982, Roots of Motive Power began as a group of friends in the timber industry who shared a passion for local history and antique machinery. Working closely with the Mendocino County Museum, the organization embarked on a mission to acquire and restore historic logging artifacts, including a blacksmith shop, period machine shop tools, and a Research Library of early steam and logging engineering. Roots hosts several public events throughout the year, including the annual Steamup, showcasing their extensive collection of antique logging and railroad equipment.
