The only continuation high school in the Napa Valley Unified School District, Valley Oak--formerly called Temescal, from the native word for "sweat lodge,"--offers an alternative path to graduation for teens who are falling behind in the district's comprehensive schools. The state-approved curriculum includes a focus on careers and the arts. Valley Oak teachers and students are on a first-name basis with each other, and staffers even call to check in on students who don't arrive at the start of the school day.
