Established in 1965, the United States Secret Service is a law enforcement agency headquartered in Washington, D.C. The agency intervenes in the cases of thefts, frauds, financial crimes and criminal investigations. It operates investigations and protection divisions. Its investigations division conducts analysis of financial cases and provides critical research and analytical support. The United States Secret Service provides protection to presidents, vice presidents and visiting foreign officials. The agency also organizes safety-related training programs for schools and the general public. It operates a threat assessment center that offers programs to promote the standardization of federal, state and local threat assessment investigations. In addition, the agency has a forensic laboratory that is accredited by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors. The United States Secret Service maintains more than 150 offices throughout United States, including Los Angeles.
