Tweedy Elementary School opened 1950 on the corner of Atlantic Blvd. and Southern Ave. In 1988, the Los Angeles Board of Education voted to close Tweedy Elementary School due to concerns about health risks at the site of the school. The school was temporarily relocated to South Gate Park on parkland-- a school consisting of bungalows. In March 1991, the lease to operate the school expired. In 1992, Congress authorized an 8-year extension in the lease for the use of the park land. The Los Angeles Unified School District had ribbon cutting ceremony for
