History
The Rusty Hook was opened in 1978 by Jerome and Sharon Rilling and Jerome's father, Arden. Much of our line-winding and rod building machines were invented and made by Arden Rilling and are still in use today. Sam Roberts, a retired American Airlines pilot, helped run the store while Jerome and Sharon did their day jobs. In 1986, Alex Masumoto joined the team as a rod builder. Over time, Alex learned the ins and outs of the tackle business and after 9 years with The Rusty Hook, purchased the business from the Rillings who were wanting to retire. Alex has built up and honed the inventory to offer most of what our local anglers needed. Alex has been fishing for over 50 years and is a veteran long range angler with over 14 trips of 15 days or longer and several shorter trips under his belt. He worked as a deckhand on the Rebel, Sea Sport, First String, and Grande out of the San Pedro landings for 2 years. He has had many trips to Baja and has also fished in Palau and Japan.
