Lighthouse Point in Long Beach, CA is home to the Long Beach Harbor Lighthouse, which holds the title for California's ugliest lighthouse. Built in 1949, this three-story, monolithic structure made of concrete was designed to withstand earthquakes and seismic tidal waves, and was hailed as the world's most modern lighthouse at the time. Equipped with a rotating airway beacon controlled by an astronomical clock, the lighthouse served as a forerunner of automated aids to navigation.
The lower floor of the tower housed generators, a radiobeacon, and air compressors for foghorns, while the skeletal tower it replaced was moved across the harbor entrance to mark the western side of the channel into Long Beach Harbor. Although the appearance of the Long Beach Harbor Lighthouse may not be enticing, visitors can also enjoy the sight of two attractive faux lighthouses in the area, including Parkers' Lighthouse Restaurant and Lions Lighthouse for Sight, which was made possible by the local Lions Club.
