Tennessee Valley Trail and Beach, known to locals as "TVB," is a fantastic hike in the Marin Headlands right in the middle of the densely populated San Francisco Bay Area. The hike is popular because it is mostly flat and offers spectacular scenery and wildlife opportunities close to home without heavy crowds. Dogs are not allowed on the main trail. The area is named after the steamer Tennessee, who missed the Golden Gate in heavy fog in 1853 and crashed into the beach. Remaining wreckage can still be seen depending on the tides.
Parking and public transportation at Tennessee Valley
Parking is free but limited at the trailhead. Even on weekdays it can be crowded if the weather is nice. There is no public transit directly to the trailhead, and the nearest stop for a Golden Gate Transit bus is on Shoreline Highway about a mile and a half away. Often the best place to park is at Oakwood Valley on the road in (signage on the left) and extending the hike by walking a spur trail off to the right.
Best and worst time go to Tennessee Valley
It really depends on the weather. When it's really nice the parking lot is often full, especially on weekends. Weekdays from 10 am till about 4 are generally good times as most locals are at work. Even when the lot is busy crowds are hard to find on the trail.
Admission to Tennessee Valley
There is no charge for parking or hiking. Dogs are not allowed on the main trail. Hours are from dawn till dusk. Camping is allowed with a pre-arranged permit in designated areas.
Must see/do at Tennessee Valley
The main trail to the beach is a 1.7 one-way or nearly 4-mile round trip with mild elevation changes. In addition to the engine block of the steamer Tennessee, the rocks above the beach also feature former military bunkers that served at lookout posts. The view from up there is spectacular and on clear days you can see to San Francisco and beyond. The hike can be extended and there are various other trails around as well. Put a picnic or snacks in your backpack and spend some time at the beach. There are no lifeguards and the surf can be treacherous, so use caution if wading in the chilly water.
Other places to visit near Tennessee Valley
The Dipsea Café, a popular breakfast/lunch spot, is on Shoreline Highway. Tennessee Valley is part of Mill Valley and close to Sausalito. Stinson Beach, Muir Woods and Mount Tamalpais are also nearby.
Insider tip for visitors to Tennessee Valley
Even when it's a beautiful day, remember you're in a valley headed to the ocean. It can be windy and chilly even when the sun is out. A warm layer like a sweatshirt is a must-have any time.
