With a location in Bakersfield, Calif., the Kern County Teen Challenge is owned and operated by the Teen Challenge of Southern California, which is a nonprofit organization. Established in 1963, the parent company owns nearly nine regional and seven residential facilities throughout Southern California. It has served over 200,000 men, women and children through its resident and outreach programs. The organization additionally offers substance abuse recovery and prevention programs. The Teen Challenge of Southern California offers various faith-based solutions for drug and alcohol addiction, as well as other life-controlling problems. It operates several after-school learning centers that provide tutoring and mentoring programs, technological opportunities, family-related workshops, counseling services and leadership formation activities. In addition, the organization offers a one-year residential drug recovery program that includes job training sessions, basic computer skills classes and curriculum that addresses domestic violence.
