Sunsweet Growers, Inc. is the world's largest handler of dried tree fruits: prunes, apricots, peaches, pears and apples. Its cooperative was founded in 1917 as the California Prune and Apricot Growers Association to market the crops of its members at better prices than were offered by speculative buyers. Sunsweet was established as the new co-op's brand name and later adopted as the organization's corporate name. Sunsweet now processes and markets the dried fruit production to hundreds of grower-members with orchard holdings in California's Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys. Sunsweet growers produce one-third of the world's prunes. Each day, an average of 60,000 cases of Sunsweet products are sealed, palletized and stored. On an extra busy day, as many as 80,000 cases can be shipped out on trucks and railcars bound for distribution around the world. Its processing plant is in Yuba City, Calif. and it bottling plant is in Fleetwood, Pa.
