The Stanford School of Education is a renowned institution that seeks to shape national and global education practices to constantly raise the standards for education. Faculty members educate their students to, in turn, become leading teachers around the world. Back in 1891 when the University was founded, the department of the History and Art of Education was one of the 21 original departments. In 1917, the department officially became the School of Education under Dean Ellwood Cubberley, whose namesake is still preserved today. In 1921, Professor Lewis Terman famously created the Stanford-Binet IQ test, which is widely used as the most common form of individual intelligence tests. The School created multiple programs throughout its history, including: Curriculum Studies and Teacher Education International Comparative Education (ICE, formerly SIDEC) International Educational Administration and Policy Analysis (IEAPA) Learning, Design, and Technology (LDT) (Master's) Learning Sciences and Technology Design (LSTD) (Doctoral) Policy, Organization, and Leadership Studies (POLS) (Master's) Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP) Social Sciences in Education Joint MA/MBA Degree Program with Graduate School of Business The school sought to create actual educational programs amongst the community in 2001. They collaborated with Aspire Public Schools to open a charter high school in East Palo Alto. The first graduating class held their ceremony in Memorial Auditorium.
