Special Olympics Southern California is an organization started with the concept of Special Olympics in 1963 as a day camp for people with intellectual disabilities. Based in Culver City, Calif., it allows the children and adults to become physically fit and respected members of society through therapeutic effects of sports training and competition in Olympic-type sports. The organization helps to develop physical fitness, courage, practice joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
