The Spangler family and staff are part of your community and we are honored to serve and support the wide variety of faith traditions that are practiced here. Spangler Mortuaries are owned and operated by citizens of our community. We are one of the few remaining non-conglomerate owned firms and the only mortuary-owned crematory on the Peninsula. We consider it our obligation to render a very vital and necessary service in the community. We also serve the community itself entering into its activities and supporting local service programs. Our firm was established in 1934 in Mountain View by Martin J. Spangler, Sr. and his wife, Mary. At the time of his death in 1977 he had given over 50 years of his life to the mortuary profession. Not only did the profession benefit from his years of dedication and service but Marty Sr. also served as Mountain View City Mayor and Council Member and Santa Clara County Supervisor. Marty Sr. and Mary were extremely active in the founding of El Camino Hospital. Marty was on the original Board of Directors and Mary was one of the original Auxiliary members. They were also active in many fraternal organizations, school programs and other worthwhile community groups. Spangler School for the Mentally Retarded and Physically Handicapped was named in his honor. Martin J. Spangler ( Marty Jr. ) and his wife, Sue, have been associated with the firm for over 60 years. They helped build our Los Altos location in 1953. Marty Jr. grew up with the mortuary business and graduated from Mountain View High School and Stanford University. Marty served as a pilot in the Air Force and has been very active in civic and community activities. He is a Past President of the Mountain View -Los Altos High School Board and the Los Altos Rotary Club. He is a member of the El Camino Hospital Foundation Board. Marty's son, M. James ( Jim ), joined Spangler Mortuaries in 1979 with his wife Caroline. Jim followed the path of his father and graduated from Awalt ( now Mountain View High School ) and Stanford University. Jim is also very active in many community organizations. He has served as the President of the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce as well as the Mountain View Rotary Club. Jim has served on several Boards of Directors including the Mountain View Chapter of United Way, the YMCA and the Community Services Agency of Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills. He has also served on the steering committee for the El Camino Hospital Foundation Associates and volunteered as a wrestling coach at St. Francis, Blach and Mountain View High Schools. Jim and his wife, Caroline, are committed to following the family's tradition of service to the community.
