South LA Cafe is a Black-owned, family-owned, and community-owned cafe and market located in the heart of South Central Los Angeles. Founded by Joe and Celia Ward-Wallace, the cafe aims to provide fresh, affordable, and healthy food options to the historically marginalized neighborhood. With a mission to fight racial, social, economic, and food inequity, South LA Cafe serves as a central hub in the community, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.
Through their activism and partnership with the SLAC Foundation and other community organizations, South LA Cafe has made a significant impact in the community, including providing vaccines, COVID tests, grocery bags, meals, and job opportunities. The cafe and market were built to combat the effects of redlining, disinvestment, and gentrification, and to celebrate and preserve the culture of the local Black and Brown folks. By offering access to high-quality food and creating a safe space, South LA Cafe is dedicated to building equity and empowering the South Central community.
