History
Second Harvest Food Bank was founded by Dan Harney and Tom Fuentes under the auspices of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and began providing food to the hungry in October 1983. In 2007, Second Harvest moved to a new distribution center on the old El Toro Marine Base, more than doubling its capacity to meet the needs of Orange County's hungry. In 2012, Second Harvest became an independent 501 c3 corporation. There are more than 290,000 people at risk of hunger each month in Orange County. We provide nutritious food to a network of 312 community and program partners, to feed more than 250,000 people each month. More than 90 cents of every dollar spent goes towards feeding those in need. .
Specialties
Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County is a non-profit whose mission is to end hunger in our community. Last year we distributed more than 26.5 million meals through a Partner Network with distribution locations in every city in Orange County. We work together to improve the lives of our county's most vulnerable populations including children and their families, seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and the homeless. Our work is sustained by generous donations of food, funds and time from individuals, foundations, corporations, manufacturers, grocery chains, restaurants, farmers, and civic groups.
