The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, headquartered in Whittier, Calif., provides community-development services. It provides wastewater and solid waste management services. The agency comprises more than 20 independent districts and serves over 75 cities within the United States. It constructs, operates and maintains facilities for the collection, treatment, recycling and disposal of wastewater and hazardous industrial waste products. It also operates more than 10 wastewater treatment plants for the treatment of over 500 million gallons of water per day. Additionally, the agency owns and operates various facilities, such as the Puente Hills Materials Recovery Facility for diverting waste from landfill sites and recovery of recycled materials, such as paper and plastic. The agency also operates a household hazardous waste collection program for the collection and disposal of various unwanted household items and chemicals, such as batteries, radioactive materials, paints and paint thinners, pesticides, white goods and electronic items, such as refrigerators, televisions, and computer monitors and printers.
