The San Francisco Sheriff's Department oversees law enforcement primarily in and around San Francisco County, Calif. The sheriff s office is a division of the county government. Its main responsibilities include providing enforcement of laws that relate to crimes against persons and property, as well as initiating investigations into such crimes. It also enforces codes and ordinances pertaining to traffic and parking. In addition, the department participates in programs that are geared toward community awareness and crime prevention. The sheriff s department maintains records and compiles reports regarding emergency calls, types of reported crimes and offender registrations. It also files reports on behalf of residents pertaining to crimes and traffic accidents. The department is comprised of more than 825 officers and 90-plus civil personnel. It is headquartered in San Francisco.
