In 1915, Safeway opened its doors in a small town in Idaho, under the name of Skaggs stores. By 1926, there were 428 Skaggs stores in 10 states and, in that same year, Skaggs merged with the Safeway grocery chain. In the 1930s, Safeway introduced produce pricing by the pound, open dating on perishables and nutritional labeling. Safeway is a nationwide supermarket chain that retails fruits, vegetables, household goods and includes pharmacies and wellness centers. There are more than 1,500 Safeway stores across the United States and Canada. These include Vons stores in Southern California and Nevada, Randalls and Tom Thumb stores in Texas, Genuardi's store in the Philadelphia area and Carrs stores in Alaska. There is a Safeway store in San Jose, Calif.
