In 1973 the Robinson Helicopter Company was founded by Frank Robinson to design and manufacture a light, inexpensive helicopter for the general aviation market. The company houses a 480,000 square foot manufacturing facility at the Torrance Airport in Southern California. In addition, the factory is equipped with computer numerically controlled machining centers. Two dynamometer test cells are used in the overhaul center for precision engine testing. Robinson was awarded ISO 9001 certification for design, manufacturing and servicing of its helicopters. Most operations, including welding, machining, assembly, painting and flight-testing, are performed on site at the Torrance factory. Robinson Helicopter Company of Torrance, California, has produced over 5,400 civil helicopters. The four-seat Model R44 was introduced in 1993 with a 130 mph cruise speed and hydraulic controls.
