Dr Afra. is a widely respected leader in the field of orthopedic surgery. As the former Chief of Sports Medicine at the UCSD, Dr. Afra has been published in numerous professional journals and books and has presented at conferences around the world, where he is considered a pioneer in the study of shoulder, knee, elbow and ankle injuries in athletes and active adults. In addition, Dr Afra is a specialist in in cartilage issues and knee cap disorders. He resides in Solana Beach with his wife Johanna and their three children, Aviya, Mycah, and Jean-Raphael.

The practice focuses on sports medicine, joint reconstruction, and fracture care. Dr Afra specializes in arthroscopic, as well as complex joint reconstruction procedures to keep patients of all age groups at the highest levels of performance. The sports medicine practice is focused on a customized approach to each individual patient, offering complete care of the injured athlete, from sprains and tears to broken bones. Dr Afra and his team regularly care for the child and active adult with injuries to the upper extremities (shoulders, elbows, and wrists) as well as the lower extremities (hips, knees, and ankles). Considering their extensive medical experience, Dr Afra and his team have managed and treated complex joint injuries and successfully guided these patients back to their peak performance. The joint replacement practice consists of hip and knee replacement surgery. Dr Afra and his team utilize minimally invasive techniques as well as traditional joint replacement surgery when necessary. Given his expansive expertise in joint and cartilage restoration techniques, surgeries are customized for what will work best for each individual patient. Dr Afra is associated with the Scripps, Sharp, and Tri-City Health Systems and was previously Chief of Sports Medicine at UCSD. He treats patient throughout San Diego County. The team is affiliated with treatment facilities in Encinitas, Carlsbad, Vista, La Jolla, La Mesa, and Grossmont.
