Prado Conservation Camp #28, jointly operated by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), is located in Chino, CA. The camp's primary mission is to provide incarcerated fire crews for fire suppression primarily in San Bernardino County, but they also respond to emergencies throughout the state. In addition to fire suppression, camp participants engage in community service and conservation projects year-round.
Established in 1963, Prado Conservation Camp is centrally located for immediate response to five different counties, with crews capable of responding anywhere in the state. The camp, under the administrative supervision of Sierra Conservation Center (SCC), has a designed capacity for 80 male minimum custody incarcerated individuals and operates with four incarcerated fire crews. Participation in the camp program is voluntary, and the camp also serves as a mobilization center for fires in Southern California, accommodating up to 1,800 incarcerated hand crews and civilian firefighters from across the state.
