History
The first map I recall making was a fantasy map with a swamp, a marsh, and a tower guarded by a wyvern when I was seven. I was entranced by the maps in my mother's copies of JRR Tolkein's Middle Earth books although I wouldn't even read them for several more. I later made maps for computer text adventures, of the property around my home, and of the streets around my father's home. At the University of Iowa I made a point of exploring every block of every street of Iowa City and its suburbs: Coralville, North Liberty, and University Heights. When I moved to Los Angeles I began making maps with one of Elysian Park, since I could find none either online or inside the park. That later led to exploring the many communities of the vast metropolis, along the way making maps to guide and amuse myself and ultimately others.
