Brian Smeets Photography, based in Hong Kong, is a photography and sound artist specializing in large-scale abstracted photography and collections of images that explore travel destinations and their experiential qualities. Through his work, Brian aims to remove the spectacle often associated with tourist destinations and instead focuses on presenting an alternative view of liminal spaces, such as train stations, bus stops, and hiking paths, that are often overlooked but play a significant role in our travel experiences. His recent work, Wakayama Atlas, consists of 80-100 images taken during a journey in the Wakayama Prefecture in Japan, emphasizing texture and surface while obscuring full views with shallow depth of field and other photographic techniques. Inspired by the work of Gerhard Richter, Brian's installations allow viewers to freely move between the images, creating a unique visual experience that highlights the physical beauty of the destinations.
