Locally owned Outdoor World has won a number of awards in local weeklies, including Best Sporting Goods Store. Specializing in camping and hunting gear and equipment, it also has one of the best fishing selections in town. It has three stores -- one in Monterey, one in Capitola and one in Santa Cruz. The Capitola store is the only in the county that carries handguns. Other merchandise includes backpacks, rain gear, car roof racks and snow sport equipment. Customers can rent skis, snowboards, and ski helmets or bring their own in for repairs and maintenance. The store makes many donations to local groups and runs a beach volleyball club.
