History
Izuto (Izzy) Otani loved to go fishing off the Ventura County coast. They say you could see him early in the morning, before the sun rose, walking down 5th street towards the beach with his fishing pole in hand. In 1952 he decided to leave the existing family business and turn his passion for fishing into a business of his own. With the support of his wife Helen, Izzy Otani's Fish Market came to life. He expanded many times over the years and the fish market became a place where people could also find Japanese groceries and fishing supplies. Izzy would always treat his friends and select customers to cooking lessons and they finally convinced him to start a restaurant. In 1972 he converted half of the store into a kitchen and hired a handful of cooks and servers. Today Izzy's grandchildren are running the restaurant and still using all of grandpa's homemade recipes and sauces that are made fresh daily. Otani's is 2013's Downtown Business of the Year by the Oxnard Chamber of Commerce.
