Despite the spread of cities, suburbs and housing developments, there are still horse-backed riders roaming the countryside. Even so, it's fair to say that the land available for such activities is rapidly dwindling.
Enter the Novato Horsemen. This organization was formed in 1939 for the advocacy and protection of horseback riding land. Over 300 members participate in cattle events, trail rides and social affairs. Membership and events are open for all participants, whether they own horses or not.
Each year, members of Novato Horsemen ride from Novato to the Halleck Creek Riding club in Nicasio as part of a sponsored barbeque where the proceeds to go to all of the club's handicapped members.
Novato Horsemens is based out of the Atherton area of Novato.
