History
In 1971 a group of women concerned about violence started a hotline and refuge for victims of domestic violence and their children in the garage of a San Jose house. Within three years, they incorporated as a non-profit organization. It was said to be the second shelter program in California and one of the first shelter programs offering bilingual English-Spanish services in the nation. Since its founding, Next Door has helped rebuild the lives of tens of thousands of women and children to become the premier agency in Santa Clara County serving the needs of families impacted by domestic violence.
