Located in the Old Alvarado region of Union City, Alvarado Elementary School is one of the oldest schools in the city. It serves Union City's diverse community, with an average student population of 860 students who speak 30 different languages. The school has set a goal to close the achievement gap for each student subgroup by 50 percent by the end of the 2012-2013 school year. The school is outfitted with state-of-the-art computer technology, two playgrounds, an open asphalt play area and an open grass field for Physical Education classes and recess activities. The school offers two special education autism classes. There is also several specialists on staff, including: one school psychologist, two literacy coaches and one speech and language specialist.
