We have been honored with an invitation to re-attend the prestigious fifteenth annual Taste of Vail in Vail, Colorado in April 2005. Last year Rick and Amber had a wonderful time meeting people from all over the world, either in the wine business or wine lovers. Only 50 of the world's most noted vintners are asked to attend. We are proud to have been invited again and look forward with great anticipation to pour our wines in such an amazing landscape as Vail. Once again, there will be something for everyone at this event, including not only wine tastings and discussions but also cigar and bourbon tastings, coffee and cheese seminars and many luncheons and dinners prepared by world-renowned chefs. If you would like to attend this event, go to tasteofvail.com. Hope to see you there! Already being unabashed pinot noir-philes, we headed right to the tables under that banner, where we met Rick Moshin, owner and winemaker of Moshin Vineyards in Healdsburg, CA., which is in Sonoma County along the Russian River, an area gaining a tremendous reputation for producing lush, complex and totally delicious pinot noirs. Rick Moshin might be the poster boy for why this area is riding such a crest of popularity buoyed by world-class wines. A family owned and operated vineyard and winery, Moshin carefully monitors every step of the winemaking process from planting the best clones to using only naturally-occurring yeast in what's a generally hands-off wine-making process. "Our goal is to make the best pinot noir in the world and keep it affordable, " said Moshin, who also produces a syrah, a merlot, and a zinfandel. His well-received pinot is a European-style Burgundy, subtle yet well-balanced and very food-friendly. He refuses to produce his Proprietor's Select pinot noir when the grapes don't meet his strictest standards. Only 540 cases of his 2000 Pinot Noir Proprietor's Select were made and yet at $28 per bottle, it's within everyone's reach. "I don't expect to get rich doing this, I only expect to produce great wines everyone can drink, " said Moshin, who this year will start work on a new three-tier, gravity-flow winery. " [ Moshin Vineyards 2001 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is ] a lovely wine with impressively delicate, subtle aromas and flavors. The light color and relatively low density suggests something wimpy is on the way, but you'll find that the wine is very expressive, offering lots of juicy cherry and strawberry fruit aromas and flavors. Pure and beautifully balanced, this is very impressive." Oliver's Market Tasting Bar Reviews November 2002 Moshin Vineyards Wines Renay Santero "Jay and I [ Renay ] are fans of his [ Rick Moshin's ] Pinot Noir, but his whole line [ of wines ] deserves exploration."
