Two years after California was admitted to statehood, and the same year Oakland was founded, Mills College opened as the first women's college west of the Rockies. Since 1862, Mills has grown to become a renowned liberal arts college, known as a center for modern dance and contemporary music. Mills Hall is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. This 135-acre campus, nestled in the foothills of Oakland, is a sanctuary in the middle of the city.
