Less than five square miles in size, the city of Vernon, Calif., has its own Class 1 fire department. All fire personnel of the Vernon City Fire Department receive some of the most advanced fire and rescue training and are provided with advanced equipment and apparatus. Nearly five fire stations ensure that a fire crew is ready to respond within every mile and a half of city property. The city is almost pure industry, with more than 1,200 businesses creating a workforce population of approximately 44,000. Such large numbers of people are working in factories, warehouses and refineries and often deal with inherently dangerous equipment. Thus, the Vernon firefighters are trained in hazardous materials, confined space rescue, rescue systems I and II, trench rescue, emergency building shoring, fire prevention and investigation and emergency response to terrorism. The Vernon City Fire Department is located in Vernon.
