History
LMWC was established May 17, 1902 and is the oldest service organization in the city of La Mesa. Our members were instrumental in the incorporation of the City of La Mesa. Through a book exchange program, we led the way to starting the first La Mesa library. Founding members were also at the forefront of starting the LM Welfare Depart. Thrift Shop. In 1904, LMWC joined California Federation of Woman's clubs and in 1905 joined the SD Southern District and became part of the national organization, the General Federation of Women's Clubs in 1906. This gave us a voice and vote in the largest women's organization in the U.S. Together, we were instrumental in women gaining the right to vote. We were also instrumental in getting lines painted on roads and highways across the country. Our clubhouse was built in 1959.
