JFTB is one of the busiest California National Guard installations with some 1.5 million people estimated to be going through the base each year. Major CalGuard tenant units include the 40th Infantry Division; the Los Alamitos Army Airfield; and the Sunburst Youth Academy, which is one of two National Guard Youth ChalleNGe academies in California that provides a live-in, military-style educational program to foster academic excellence and instill values in teens who have dropped out of high school or are at risk of dropping out. The base also hosts element of the U.S. Army Reserve, including the 79th Sustainment Support Command, 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, and the 11th Military Police Brigade. Specialties
The California National Guard's JFTB is a joint military training base and airfield centered in Southern California. The base serves a wide variety of roles, including its critical mission as the hub to the nation/state for emergency response. Mission First and foremost, the base supports deploying California Soldiers and Airmen throughout the world, including Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Outside of that realm, the base mission is also to maintain a steadfast position in supporting the Defense Support of Civil Authorities as a central staging area for military units tasked to respond for emergency action.
