History
Instrumental Theatre exists to create provocative, relevant and affordable theatre. Founding Artistic Director Paul Cello started the company in 2008 with 2 actors and a great new short play. As Paul looked at the Bay Area theatrical scene he noticed that while there seemed to be a lot of opportunities for local playwrights to develop their work in laboratories, staged readings or workshops there were few local companies devoting the bulk of their energy and resources to PRODUCING plays by local writers. Instrumental Theatre was formed to do two things: promote the work of local playwrights and focus its efforts on the vital combination of powerful language, deeply committed acting and social relevance.
Specialties
Instrumental Theatre is committed to producing work by Bay Area playwrights that highlights the beautiful complexity of human experience and asks provocative questions about how we live today. By focusing on the primacy of the actor's instrument as it joins with the written word we create theatre that retains its power to move, entertain and change.
