The Los Angeles Hyperion Treatment Plant is located in southwest Los Angeles next to Dockweiler State Beach on Santa Monica Bay. Hyperion is operated by the Los Angeles Department of Public Works Bureau of Sanitation. Hyperion encompasses full secondary as well as primary treatment facilities, air quality control and odor management systems. The treatment plant was among the first in the world to capitalize upon the energy value of the sludge it treated. Secondary treatment capacity has expanded to prevent virtually all minute particles suspended in effluent from being discharged to the ocean environment. The Hyperion Treatment Plant began operation in 1950.
