The Housing Authority of the County of San Joaquin is a public agency that is responsible for providing affordable housing options for low-income families, senior citizens and individuals with disabilities. Established in 1942, it designs, builds and manages developments and individual housing units throughout San Joaquin County, Calif. The authority assists more than 19,000 people through the distribution of over 4,810 housing vouchers and by managing and maintaining nearly 1,075 housing units. Its Housing Choice Voucher Program provides rent subsidies in the form of housing assistance payments to private landlords on behalf of eligible families. The authority administers the Family Self-Sufficiency program, which assists residents in becoming independent of public assistance. It also operates supportive services centers that offer computer-based learning instruction in math, reading and writing; job readiness training and resume preparation assistance; counseling for individuals involved in substance abuse or domestic violence; and day care and transportation.
