History
Congregation Emanu-el dedicated its first cemetery during San Francisco's Gold Rush Era. In 1889 the cemetery relocated to Colma. Home of Peace consists of twenty acres of graciously landscaped gardens at the foot of the San Bruno Mountains. The grounds and mausoleums are respectfully maintained under endowed care. Prior to constructing the Home of Peace Mausoleum, private family mausoleums were the only option for above ground entombments and inurnments. The family names on these mausoleums represent a roster of San Francisco's historic figures. In 1934, the indoor mausoleum was opened. Its stunning architecture is reminiscent of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, as well as Congregation Emanu-El's own building in Presidio Heights. Home of Peace has designated sections for two Bay Area synagogues: Congregation Beth Sholom and Peninsula Temple Sholom.
