Founded in 1986 by Master Ryuho Okawa, Happy Science, or Kofuki-no-Kagaku, is a universal religion that believes in El Cantare, or Buddha and God. It is open to people of all backgrounds, though joining requires an application form and a short welcoming ceremony. Members will be asked "Do you believe in the Lord?" and receive the prayer book, "The Dharma of the Right Mind."

Church activities include reading and studying the books of Master Okawa to deepen one's relationship with God, attending weekly prayer services, watching lecture videos, attending international retreats, attending meditation and contemplation sessions, supporting charity activities in Africa and Asia, hosting "Friends Against Suicide" and "Anti-Bullying" campaigns and meeting other religious people around the world.

Dharma Realm Buddhist Association Inc

The Dharma Realm Buddhist Association brings Buddhists together for classes, meditation and lectures. All events at the association are free and open to the public. The center is non-traditional in that most of its programs are led in English instead of Chinese. The association doubles as the International Translation Institute. All lectures are freely available on the association website.

Rissho Kosei-Kai Buddhist Church of San Francisco

When Rissho Kosei Kai Buddhist Church opened its doors in September of 1979, it represented one of the first footholds for institutionalized Buddhism in what was then 20-year-old Pacifica. The church, housed in a building once occupied by St. Andrew United Presbyterian Church, is but one branch of Tokyo-based Rissho Kosei-kai Buddhism, which has locations around the world. Kazuhiko Nagamoto, the minister at the Pacifica sanctuary, said that the organization focuses on the teachings of the Lotus Sutra, one of numerous Buddhist texts. The Rissho Kosei-kai website rk-world.org says the Lotus Sutra is a "teaching of human respect, both the study and practice of a spiritual path that develops human potential, and a way of living that seeks peace for all people." Although the church's congregation of about 150 Pacificans and residents of surrounding areas is not heavily involved in the community through ministry or evangelicalism, Nagamoto says the church does participate in Pacifica's annual Fogfest and hosts a rummage sale every August. He said that his church primarily works to change the community through changing the individual, a strategy he believes sets Buddhism apart from religions such as Christianity.

Jehovah's Witnesses

The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on Oak Ave is home to three separate congregations divided by the neighborhoods where the parishioners live. The Hillside and Westborough congregations are English-speaking, while the El Roble congregation conducts services in Spanish. Each congregation meets once during the week as well as on Sundays, and parishioners regularly go door-to-door for religious outreach.
