Dr. Dean Wang is a board-certified UCI Health orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in sports-related musculoskeletal injuries of the knee, shoulder, hip and elbow. His clinical expertise includes advanced minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures and reconstructive joint surgery. He also specializes in biologic joint preservation procedures, including modern cartilage restoration techniques and arthroscopic hip preservation surgery. His clinical expertise also includes ACL injury, meniscus injury, rotator-cuff repair, shoulder stabilization and labral repair, biceps injury, Tommy John surgery, tennis and golfer's elbow, and platelet-rich plasma and biologic therapies. Wang earned a medical degree from the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute and National Institutes of Health research scholar. Wang completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, followed by a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. During his two-year fellowship, he served as an assistant team physician for the NFL’s New York Giants, Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls and Iona College Athletics in New Rochelle, N.Y., and as an orthopedic consultant for the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Men’s Basketball Tournament. He is the chief orthopaedic physician for UCI Athletics. Wang's research interests include cartilage repair and restoration, biologic therapies for cartilage, tendon and ligament repair, knee ligament reconstruction and joint biomechanics. He is the author of more than 90 scientific manuscripts and textbook chapters that have received national recognition and awards within the field of sports medicine. He also lectures frequently on these topics at national and international conferences.
