Located in the heart of Hollywood, Crossroads of the World has been called America's first outdoor shopping mall. Built in 1936, Crossroads is recognized by the city and the U.S. government as an architectural landmark and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Today, it's made-up of private offices, primarily for the entertainment industry, including music publishers and producers, television and film script writers, novelists, costume designers, publicists and casting agencies. The central building was designed to resemble an ocean liner surrounded by cottage-style bungalows, emulating a European-style village. It still houses a 55-foot spire topped with a globe and has been restored to its former glory. The building is often used for location shoots, as it was in the film L.A. Confidential. CrossRoads stretches a full city block, from Sunset to Selma, with an entrance off Las Palmas.
