The Elk Grove and Galt fire departments merged in 2006 to form the Cosumnes Fire Department, which now covers both cities. Chief Tracey Hansen, Sacramento County's first female fire chief, oversees eight stations and a staff of 150 professional firefighters. At least three more stations are planned to serve the communities' growing population. In addition to putting out fires, the department responds to vehicle accidents and other medical emergencies and provides a range of fire prevention and safety education services. It strives to respond to calls within six minutes or less, a standard that was met 89 percent of the time in 2009. Firefighters from around the county come to brush up on their skills at the department's brand-new training facility on East Stockton Blvd., which includes a building that can be set on fire for drills, along with areas for practicing trench and cliff rescues. Fire Marshal George Apple and his staff of inspectors ensure that new and remodeled buildings are up to code, while special task forces work on disaster planning and terrorism readiness. New parents who want instruction in installing their child's car seat can call the department's public education officer, who also makes safety presentations to schools and businesses. Residents wanting to report an emergency should call 911. All non-urgent calls go to the department's administrative offices. The department also maintains an arson tip hotline.
