Parlin Fork Conservation Camp #6, located in Fort Bragg, CA, is the oldest fire camp in Northern California and the second oldest in the state. Jointly operated by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), the camp's primary mission is to provide incarcerated hand crews to support local, state, and federal agencies in emergency response efforts such as fires and floods. In addition, camp participants engage in year-round community service and conservation projects.
Surrounded by ancient redwood forests within the boundaries of the Jackson Demonstration Forest, Parlin Fork Conservation Camp #6 was established in 1949 by the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center to provide fire suppression and work crews for the protection and maintenance of the forest. Over the years, operational responsibility for the camp shifted between CDCR and CAL FIRE, with CDCR overseeing inmate supervision and care, and CAL FIRE maintaining the camp facilities and supervising incarcerated fire crews. With a capacity for 100 minimum custody incarcerated individuals, the camp also offers various support roles and rigorous training processes for participants.
