Stanford University's very own museum, the Cantor Arts Center, displays works from all over the world, spanning 4,000 years of art history. Completely free to visit, Cantor offers constantly changing exhibitions, tours, classes and special events.
The Leland Stanford, Jr. Museum was founded in 1894, shortly after the University was founded in 1891, and thus has deep roots in the school's history. The early founding reflects the Stanfords' dedication to the arts. The Stanford family would travel the world collecting objects of art and cultural interest to display in the museum. In 1999, the museum was renamed the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts.
Highly integrated with the Art & Art History Department, student works are often showcased. The museum serves as a place for rich and diverse educational opportunities for students and faculty, but also always opens its doors to the public. In 2005, the Center celebrated its one-millionth visitor.
