Caltrans, also known as the California Department of Transportation, is governed by the State of California. The department is responsible for the maintenance of the state s highways and freeway lanes. It provides intercity rail services. The department permits more than 400 public-use airports and hospital heliports. Caltrans administers aeronautics, highway and mass transportation programs. It operates an equipment service center, as well as transportation planning and administration sections. The department has completed Albion River Bridge Replacement, Alton Interchange, Hopland Bypass and Elk Tieback Wall projects. Caltrans engineering services division offers geotechnical and structure construction and design solutions. The department also manages a transportation planning division.
