California State Parks Backpacking Adventures (CASPBA) program officially began in 2016.

Specialties

This program is truly unique, the only such program led by California State Park staff. We offer naturalist-led backpacking trips in the Santa Cruz Mountains, sharing with you the natural and cultural history of the area. Trips vary in length and difficulty, proposing options for every experience level. Each trip provides two naturalists and you can meet them before hand at one of our in-person or video-conference pre-trip meetings. Native plant teas, trail desserts, demonstrations, stories, and jokes are added bonuses!

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation-Ben Lomond

Ben Lomond Conservation Camp #45, jointly operated by CDCR and CAL FIRE, is located in the mountains of Santa Cruz County, providing tens of thousands of hours of community service annually to Santa Cruz and neighboring counties. The camp's primary mission is to improve safety and quality of life for residents while offering incarcerated individuals a rehabilitative environment to develop skills for successful reintegration into society. The camp houses a maximum of 113 minimum custody male felon convicts, engaging in firefighting, conservation projects, and community service. In addition to maintaining a mechanic shop and farm, participants have access to rehabilitative programs, educational services, and ongoing training to prepare for successful reintegration upon release.
