Gabilan Conservation Camp #38 is a joint operation between the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). Located in Soledad, California, the camp's primary mission is to support emergency response teams during fires, floods, and other natural or manmade disasters. Gabilan Conservation Camp #38 is equipped to operate six Type 1 Fire Crews and conducts annual fire crew preparedness exercises to ensure readiness for the fire season.
The camp also engages in community service projects and hazard fuel reduction efforts in collaboration with local governments, state, and federal agencies in San Benito, Monterey, Santa Clara, and San Luis Obispo Counties. These projects include habitat restoration, reforestation, erosion control, and maintenance of greenbelts and hiking trails. Gabilan Conservation Camp #38 also provides feeding operations at emergency incidents through its Mobile Kitchen Unit, capable of serving up to 3,000 breakfasts and/or dinners to staff assigned to the emergency.
