The mission of the Bureau of Reclamation is to manage, develop and protect water and related resources in an environmentally and economically sound manner in the interest of the American public. Established in 1902, the department is best known for the dams, power plants and canals it constructed in approximately 20 western states. Part of the United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation has constructed more than 600 dams and reservoirs, including Hoover Dam on the Colorado River and Grand Coulee on the Columbia River. It is one of the largest wholesalers of water in the country. Bureau of Reclamation is also one of the largest producers of hydroelectric power in the western United States. It has nearly 60 power plants that produce enough electricity to serve more than 5 million homes.
