An affiliate of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the Foothill organization originated from the community's need to establish quality activities as a solution for delinquency, juvenile crime and drug use among the youth of Monrovia. The Club was founded by a group of civic leaders joined by area business people and interested persons. In 1994 the first Clubhouse was opened in Monrovia. The Club has served over 6000 children since our opening with more than 3, 000 boys and girls currently registered. For years the Club has provided guidance and constructive after school activities for "at risk youth living in the densely populated and multi-ethnic areas of Monrovia, Duarte and Arcadia. With special concern for children from disadvantaged circumstances, the Club helps children develop those qualities needed to become responsible citizens and leaders. Members of the Boys and Girls Club of the Foothills participate in daily programs offered in the Learning Center, the Arts & Crafts Department, the Social Recreation/Games Room, and the Athletic Department. In the Learning Center, Children receive computer instruction and tutoring services. They have the opportunity to complete homework in a quiet area and to participate in reading incentive activities. In the Arts & Crafts Program, children participate in activities that promote creativity and an understanding and appreciation for Fine Arts. In the Social Recreation/Games Room, children participate in individual games and tournaments. They have the opportunity to develop sportsmanship, constructive use of leisure time, life long hobbies and game room skills. In Athletics, children participate in organized sports activities, develop athletic skills and team cooperation. The Club provides young people with a positive alternative to drugs, gangs, crime and juvenile delinquency.
