History
In 1907, Dr. McNair named the facility Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital to identify this practice as no longer treating farm animals. Following Dr. McNair's retirement, Dr. J.W.Roberts spent his career tending to the ills of the growing pet population in Berkeley. By the 1960's, under Drs. Cucuel & Frye, the practice was expanded to include reptile/avian medicine and soon became the source of scientific articles on the care of unusual pets and the first textbook published on reptile medicine. In 1976, Drs. Benjamin & Shriro took over the practice and 2-years later started Special Veterinary Service, a novel concept of specialists all sharing a single facility. With board certified specialists available, patients could be referred locally instead of to UCDavis. We were the first private veterinary hospital in the world to install a CT scanner. Today, we have one of the largest and sophisticated facilities in the state. Please visit our website to see our full list of services.
